Ever wondered if spirits exist? Ever thought about the fact that the place you thought was majestic could actually be haunted?
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, located deep in West Virginia, is a magnificent building that almost seems like a mansion owned by someone wealthy. Well, however impressive it may seem, it still was once a psychiatric hospital where unimaginable incidents had taken place. Yet, no matter what happened, it was all in the past. But it seems that this place is haunted by its shadow to date.
It was built to take in 250 patients, but by the 1950s, there were about 2,400 patients packed into the building. It was horrible to have such a choking environment, not only for the patients but also for the staff. It didn’t end there. Of course, some patients were given merciless treatments to 'aid' their mental illnesses - getting whipped, nearly drowning them in ice water, restraining them to the wall, and many other painful and brutal acts. They even received electroshock therapy and lobotomies, which were banned later in 1967, with ice picks.
The hospital eventually closed down, putting a stop to the cruel acts. But it definitely isn’t uninhabited. It is said that the spirits of some of the patients still roam in the deserted halls of this hospital. Unexplainable activities like objects moving on their own, voices coming from the rooms, and whatnot are said to have been experienced.
Lily, one of the most talked-about ghosts was a 9-year-old girl. It is believed that she was born in this hospital itself. People have claimed to hear her laughing, whispering, and turning on flashlights. Experiencing the spirit of a 9-year-old doing such a thing isn’t such a delightful feeling. But then again, this place is haunted after all.
On the third floor, two spirits have been spotted – one named Big Jim, and the other is a nurse named Elizabeth. Doors are left open by this dead nurse Elizabeth who still does her rounds even after her death.
A hospital with a past trapped in it for so long, will these spirits ever be free, or will they continue to haunt the halls of Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum?
